Head Start, Trauma Smart
In an effort to respond to the trauma endemic in the community of Wyandotte County Kansas, Economic Opportunity Foundation Inc. Head Start Program and the Crittenton Children's Center was awarded a REACH Foundation Grant for the Head Start Resilency Project.
In an organized effort to educate staff at 14 Head Start program sites in Wyandotte County, Kansas about the signs and impact of trauma in young children and to expand mental health services for children needing therapy.
Licensed clinical social workers provides weekly, on-site mental health therapy using trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and evidence-based approach that helps children problem-solve in situations that trigger feelings fo anger or distress.
Head Start Teachers and Center Directors have observed more positive, supportive interactions between staff and children.
