Economic Opportunity Foundation, Inc.

Employment Services Program -

Economic Opportunity Foundation Inc.  Employment Services Program, along with other Wyandotte County based organizations became an active partner in the Minority Remediation Program in Wyandotte County, Kansas, offered by OAI, Inc., a non-profit worker training organization out of Chicago, IL, funded by a grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Services.

As a partner in this program, the EOF Employment Services Coordinator and Employment Specialists were asked to recruit, select and monitor eight (8) qualified candidates (ex-offenders, underemployed, displaced workers) to participate in, and graduate as Certified Environmental Technicians from the nine (9) week training program.  After other groups which were asked to partner and participate dropped out because of lack of funding, EOF became the primary partner and added ten (10) additional candidates.  These additional participants could be added due to ARRA funding, bringing the total to eighteen (18) participants. Participants worked to become certified as OSHA Compliance, EPA/OSHA Training Certified, Demolition, Clean-up, and Labor and Hazardous Waste Compliant worker. Also participants were trained in asbestos and mold removal.  Additional services provided to the participants were drug screening, physicals, providing tools and equipment and lung capacity testing.

Since graduation, three (3) participants were hired on the spot from the company that did the training; three (3) participants were sent to Nebraska right away to participate in a clean-up and others has been hired in the field of asbestos removal.  The average salary of those working is $17.82 hr.

EOF Employment Services Employees were integral to the successful administration of this employment training program by providing facilitation and oversight to OAI, Inc throughout the nine-week program.

Based upon its successful facilitation of the Minority Remediation Program, OAI, Inc. has invited Economic Opportunity Foundation Inc. to participate in all future Facilitator’s Planning Sessions.
